Share the Klout Wealth – Give +K to Your Friends

We all know that givers get and that a principle of social media is to add value to your community.  One great way to add value to your community is to give them +K.  Giving +K and getting +K is one of the keys to winning at Klout.

Giving +K is like voting (although probably more important than voting) on a persons influence on a topic.  For example, you can give me, Krista +K on Klout to tell Klout that I influence you about Klout (which I obviously do).

For example, I gave +K on Diseases to Jason Falls, because he recently influenced me on diseases.  In this case, the game of Klout already knew that he was influential on diseases, so I only had to click the +K button.

Jason appreciated the recognition for his influence on Diseases, so he thanked me on Twitter.  Since he has more influence than me, and he mentioned me on Twitter he is helping my Klout score go up EVEN MORE!  This also shows one of our other Klout Facts at play (Fact #13) – Klout likes it when you like Klout – the more active you are on Klout the more Klout you will have.

I also recently gave +K to my friend Kevin Dugan (@prblog) on Hoarders, which Klout already knew he was influential on (Klout is so smart).

But sometimes, Klout doesn’t know what you are influential on, so the game allows you to enter your own topics.  You can see the enter topics button on this screenshot, where you can add a topic.  For example, Lee Odden recently influenced me on Unicorns, so I added it to his topics list.

A friend of mine, Joe Robb was recently influenced by me on Falkland Islands English, so he added it to my Klout topics list to let them know.

Here are some tips to successfully giving +K:

  • Give +K to people with higher Klout than you, remember that Klout likes snobs, don’t fraternize with people beneath you.
  • Add new topics to show Klout that you are smarter than it
  • Harass your friends to give you +K to improve your +K score (Klout likes spam about Klout)
  • Give me +K on Klout
  • Remember, Klout only gives you a limited number of +K. Use them wisely.

Fact: You Have More Influence the More You Talk

Now logic may suggest otherwise. You might think that if you rarely speak that people will really pay attention to the things that you do say and therefore you will have more influence than someone who constantly talks with nothing important to say. That is completely incorrect.

The game of Klout, which is the Standard of All Influence rewards you the more you talk to people. Klout likes you to be addicted to social media. Social media addicts have more influence.

You can increase your Klout score by Tweeting more frequently and talking to people. Frequent Tweets can increase your Klout score because the more you talk the more influential you must be. People who talk a lot have more influence than those who don’t, and talking a LOT will help you win at the game of Klout. The more you talk the more points you get.

Klout doesn’t like it if you are anti-social and don’t interact with people. Anti-social people on Twitter have no influence. Klout likes it when you talk to people and send them replies. Talking to people is a sign of influence. You may argue that some very influential people don’t talk to people – like the President or Oprah or even someone like Seth Godin. Well, they have less influence because they are antisocial.  Klout Fact: Anti-social people have no influence.

So, the Klout Tip of the Day:

Increase your Klout Score by Talking All The Time and Talking At People.

Steps to Winning at Klout (Beginner)

Winning at Klout is important for any marketer or social media expert, guru or ninja who wants to be taken seriously. As such, winning at Klout should be one of your chief goals.

Here are the beginner steps for winning at Klout.

1) Sign up for Klout

You can’t have influence if you don’t sign up for Klout. I don’t care how important you may think you are IRL. It is BS. Klout is The Standard of Influence so you can’t have influence if you don’t sign up for Klout.

2) Connect all of Your Social Networks

Connect Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter to your account. Also, stay tuned for planned Klout integrations with Myspace and Friendster.

Giving Klout all of your data for free will improve your Klout score. Don’t worry about how they will use it. They have a privacy policy on their site.

3) DM all of your Friends and Ask them to Give You K Points

Ask all of your friends to log in to Klout and give you points. Points in Klout can help you with the algorithm and increase your Klout score. Part of the beauty of Klout is that you can increase your score just by caring about it.

4) Log In to Klout Every Day

The more you login to Klout, the higher your score will be. Klout likes people who spend more time on their site. The more you are on Klout the higher your score will be.

5) Spend More Time on Social Media

Klout rewards you for spending more time on social media. Since social media is the only measure of influence, the more time you spend on social media the more influential you are. Klout rewards activity on social networks.

How to Leverage Your Klout Score

Today we got a question from a reader, Janice, asking how she can leverage her Klout score. Check out the email she sent us:

“Dear How to Win at Klout,

I have been reading your tips for a while now, and they have dramatically improved my Klout performance.  I have increased my Klout score by 20 points all thanks to your tips about the game!

My question is, now that I have a high Klout score, how can I leverage this to generally improve my life?”

– Janice

***Note: results not typical***

Janice, this is a great question.  Winning at Klout is the first step, but once you have won at Klout, the question is how do you leverage it to get the life you always dreamed of.

We’ll share some of our best uses for a high Klout score.

When dating, it is important to make sure that the person that you go on a date with understands how high your Klout score is.  They should understand that you are a big deal right from the start.  Be sure to prominently place your score on your eHarmony profile.

Getting Out of Jail

Fact: Once your Klout score goes above 70, you get a “Get Out Of Jail Free” card.  All of the celebrities have them (they also have high K scores).  Ask Lindsey Lohan.

With Friends

You can user your Klout score against your friends.  When they ask you to do something you don’t want to do, or they generally annoy you, you can threaten to Tweet about them with your high Klout score.  This will make you much more popular also.

With Your Clients

Clients and businesses like to work with people with high Klout scores.  They also don’t understand anything about social media.  Rather than actually explaining things to them or answering their questions you should simply say “Obviously I know what I’m talking about. Have you seen my Klout score?”

Getting In To Bars and Restaurants

Last week, I went to a bar and there was a line.  I was NOT about to wait in line like a commoner who has no influence.  I went to the bouncer:

Me: “Hey, there is NO WAY I am waiting in that line”

Him: “Sorry, but you have to.”

Me: “Do you know who my father is?!?!?!”

Him: “No.”

Me: “Do you know what my Klout score is?  I have influence!

Him: “Sorry, I didn’t know who you were. Please, come in and don’t use Twitter against me.”

These are just a few of the many ways that a high Klout score can help you in your life.
